Remote Control Robot

Interdisciplinary Project

I and my team of 6 total members were tasked with developing, from scratch, a remote control robot that picks up, collects, and dumps blocks into a bin. We designed all the components by hand in SolidWorks, created professional engineering drawings, manufactured each part in a machine shop, and assembled our design. We calculated the appropriate physical mechanics to justify our model and used these calculations to select motors capable of handling the necessary torques and speeds of the system. We designed a robot complete with a scoop to pick up blocks and a scissor lift to raise and release the blocks into bins. Our design is one of a select few that was chosen to be displayed in a showcase for its mechanical design, performance, and craftsmanship.

What I Learned

I learned the importance of making accurate calculations in early design stages to account for safety factors and developing prototypes to serve as a proof of concept to complement CAD drawings.
